Whiskers are the pale, radiating lines that appear across the upper thigh, hip and crotch area of jeans, formed as the fabric creases and rubs at the same points every time the wearer sits, bends or walks. Over time, the raised parts of these creases lose more indigo dye than the recessed folds, creating a lighter, fan shaped pattern against the darker surrounding denim.
On genuinely worn raw denim, whiskers develop naturally and are unique to the individual wearer's body and habits, which is part of the appeal for people who deliberately break in raw jeans over months of wear. Many pre washed and distressed jeans imitate this effect artificially during manufacturing, using targeted sanding or laser etching to recreate a similar pattern without the wait.
