Comfort stretch is a common way to describe denim with a relatively light amount of elastic fiber, enough to make the fabric noticeably easier to move in without pushing for the closest possible fit. It sits between fully rigid denim and more heavily stretched fabric used in very fitted styles.
The goal of comfort stretch is all day wearability: fabric that flexes with sitting, bending and walking, then settles back into shape, rather than fabric engineered mainly to hug the body closely. This makes it a frequent choice for relaxed, straight or classic fit jeans where a soft, easy feel matters more than a snug silhouette.
Because the term is descriptive rather than a strict standard, comfort stretch fabric can vary somewhat between brands and garments, so checking the actual elastane percentage on the label gives a more precise picture. See the entry on elastane and our stretch versus rigid guide for more detail.
